History

Gwithian Towans is common land which has been managed by Penwith District Council and Cornwall County Council for a number of years. Years ago the site was used as a war defence post and some mining activity also took place.

The area is now predominately used for recreation purposes. However, due to increased pressures from tourists and visitors and with the site being designated as a SSSI, the area requires more preservation and therefore, is being designated as a Local Nature Reserve.
