With nature having reclaimed the Red River Valley as its own there
is always plenty of work to be done, improving habitat areas, maintaining
the paths, and providing for the many users of the Local Nature
Reserve. Much of this work is carried out by volunteer groups which
gives members of the community and visitors to the area a chance
to get involved.
Without active management throughout the Local Nature Reserve
(LNR) many of the rare and special habitats that are present today
may be lost to the rapid encroachment of gorse and willow. Many
of the species cherished by regular users of the area, such as
dragonflies and butterflies, are specialists and require certain
conditions to thrive. An extensive management plan for the LNR
has been drawn up and work is carried out throughout the year.
The Kerrier Conservation Crew, a local volunteer conservation
group, works hard to ensure that habitats are preserved for the
wildlife that has re-colonised the river valley. By clearing gorse
and cleaning out ponds this team of dedicated people encourage
wildlife and people to enjoy the local nature reserve. Recording
and monitoring of plant and animal species is carried out to assess
the biodiversity of the valley, and to understand the re-colonisation
of the area. To date their findings have been most useful in enhancing
the conservation value of the site.
There are numerous other groups who also help out on the LNR. If you are interested
