Upton Towans is owned by Cornwall County Council and managed by the
Cornwall Wildlife Trust. Until 1945 Upton Towans was the site of the
National Explosives factory. The beautiful dunes now almost entirely
conceal this history, but if you look carefully at some of the dunes,
you will see they are actually square and the legacy of dynamite bunkers.
Due to an increased number of visitors to the area and with the
site being part of the SSSI, more preservation is needed and
the site has,
therefore been designated as a Local Nature Reserve.
